Aim

The Land Interoperability Standards Working Group (LISWG), established by the Military Committee (MC) and operating under the authority of the Military Committee Land Standardization Board (MCLSB), is charged with enhancing the effectiveness of NATO land forces through improved standardization and interoperability. Focusing on operational-level standardization in support of joint and combined land operations, the LISWG aligns its work with the NATO Interoperability Policy and the NATO Strategy for Enhancing Interoperability, ensuring a comprehensive and coherent approach.

To strengthen interoperability across the Alliance, the LISWG reviews, evaluates, and provides recommendations—via the MCLSB—on interoperability and standardization matters. Its work recognizes the indispensable role standardization plays in enabling, sustaining, and improving cooperation among national armed forces, governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and private-sector partners engaged in NATO or coalition operations. To enhance the operational effectiveness of NATO land forces through improved standardization and interoperability.

To review, assess, and advise on interoperability and standardization issues within the land domain.

To ensure that NATO land operations benefit from a coherent, policy-aligned, and holistic approach to interoperability.

Event Objectives

  • Review ongoing interoperability and standardization initiatives relevant to land operations and identify gaps requiring MC or MCLSB attention.
  • Develop and refine standardization proposals, work strands, and recommendations aligned with NATO's interoperability policies and strategic direction.
  • Promote a common understanding of interoperability requirements across national representatives and partner organizations.
  • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing among NATO nations, agencies, NGOs, IOs, and industry stakeholders involved in land-domain interoperability.
  • Advance deliverables within the LISWG Programme of Work, ensuring progress on assigned tasks and preparation of outputs for MCLSB review.
  • Strengthen the integration of operational lessons learned into standardization efforts to support joint and combined land operations.

Target audience

  • National representatives assigned to the LISWG or responsible for land-domain interoperability and standardization.
  • NATO Command and Force Structure personnel engaged in operational planning, doctrine, and standardization.
  • Subject-matter experts from national defense agencies, land forces, and interoperability directorates.
  • Representatives from NATO agencies and centers, including MILENG COE and other COEs with interoperability equities.
  • Liaison officers from international organizations (IOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with operational interoperability roles.
  • Industry partners involved in land systems, C2 systems, interoperability solutions, and standardization support.
